Top celebrity, LA-based facialist Gina Marí is renowned for ensuring her clients leave with glowing, healthy-looking skin after an appointment with her. To unveil the truths about dehydrated skin and its origins we spoke to the expert about her top tips and recommendations for obtaining and maintaining hydrated, happy, healthy skin.
Why is maintaining well-hydrated skin so important?
Hydration is key for both our overall health but also the health of our skin. We’re made up of around 80%, and with our skin being our largest organ a lack of moisture really shows there. Our skin cells need to be fed and without proper levels of hydration you can expect to see a sallow color on the surface and pigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles will be more noticeable. Everyone wants that no make-up look – all the time – and you cannot achieve bright, dewy and glowy skin without good moisture. It’s important to ensure you’re drinking enough water but it’s also important to make sure that the products you’re using on your skin deliver plenty of hydration too. If the skin is severely dehydrated it can often feel tight and uncomfortable, so that should also tell you that you’re in need of a top-up. Put simply, if you allow your hydration levels to fall you’re not doing yourself any favors.
What happens when our skin is allowed to become dehydrated?
If the skin’s hydration levels are constantly low, the skin barrier (which is the natural protective barrier of our skin) can become damaged. Our skin has something called a Natural Moisture Factor (or NMF) which is a perfect balance between oil and water within the skin (oil secreted through the oil glands and water secreted through the sweat glands). If hydration drops, and this precise balance is disrupted, the skin becomes prone to inflammation which is particularly troublesome if you’re someone who suffers from rosacea, eczema or psoriasis. By keeping the skin hydrated at all times you’re supporting that barrier, and that balance of oil and water, and so helping to keep more chronic conditions under control.
How can we tell if skin is properly hydrated?
Take your index finger and your thumb and gently lift a section of skin on your forearm or the back of your hand. Let go and notice how long it takes for the skin to snap back into shape. If it bounces back quickly you can be confident your skin is getting enough moisture. However, if it takes its time to settle back into its shape then that’s a sign you’re in need of more water; both internally and externally/topically via products.
What is one of the main culprits behind suboptimal skin?
Stress, it’s just terrible for skin. When we’re stressed our Cortisol levels rise which can have a huge negative impact on skin. If we live a stressed-out lifestyle - and our Cortisol levels are continuously running high – the skin can suffer in many ways; circulation becomes sluggish (good circulation is vital for dewy, strong and clear skin) and the complexion takes on a greyish tone. Our mental wellbeing and physical wellbeing are linked and maintaining a happy and healthy lifestyle is one of the best things you can do both for yourself and your skin.
How can we further avoid skin inflammation?
Temperature extremes are really taxing for the skin. Depending on where you are in the world it’s likely that your skin is often shocked from one temperature to another and that can result in unnecessary stress on the skin and even broken capillaries. For example, if you’re in a freezing environment – in the Nordics or on the slopes maybe – and suddenly you step indoors into a very hot room, your skin can’t adjust quickly enough. Similarly, if you’re somewhere like Miami, where it’s really warm outside and you step into a cool air-conditioned store, your skin goes through the same trauma. A good technique to help your skin acclimatise to either an extremely cold or an extremely hot environment is to place the palms of your hands on your cheeks for 30-seconds or so, it might just stop you from bursting a capillary.
What does the perfect evening skincare regimen look like?
It’s while you’re sleeping that your skin can dedicate time to renewing itself. You might be relaxing but your skin cells are working really hard. It’s in your evening skin regimen where you should really focus on using an Antioxidant-rich serum to repair damage caused during the day and a deeply hydrating moisturizer and eye cream to top-up depleted skin hydration levels.
What should make up our morning skincare regimen?
Morning regimens should consist of far less product so a simple regimen is best; a good cleanse, a refreshing toner or mist and, of course, a sunblock. Our skin also benefits from some good lymphatic massage in the morning too. Often we wake looking a little puffy – especially true if you’re someone with allergies – and a firm facial massage will help to drain away all that excess fluid. Facial massage is a great way to make skin look brighter and more vibrant.
How can we make skin look better without resorting to more make-up?
Everyone wants flawless skin without having to wear a lot of make-up. The key to achieving beautiful skin that needs less make-up is having a great regimen. For example, it goes without saying, never fall asleep without washing your face first. Great skin requires discipline and doing proper steps every day; cleanser, toner and moisturiser without fail. You have to tend to your skin in order for it to look its best.
Is it important to always stick to the same regimen?
When it comes to your skincare you don’t need to do exactly the same thing everyday, it’s really more about paying attention to what your skin is telling you. If your skin is looking a little lackluster then do a gentle exfoliation and follow-up with an Antioxidant serum. If you suffer from rosacea learn to recognize what your triggers are and eliminate them. If you have melasma (like me) then always be prepared; carry a hat and always wear sunblock. Really think about what your skin needs are. But, there is one thing that you do need to do consistently and that’s hydrate; no skin regimen is complete without it.
How has Lumene slotted into your skin regimen?
I can’t get enough of the Valo Arctic Berry Cocktail Brightening Hydra-Oil. I tend to use the hydrating mist all over my face and then apply the cocktail while my skin is still damp. I find that applying product onto slightly damp helps the product to penetrate, which also means you need to use less of it.
What do you love about Lumene?
I’m really impressed with the quality of the ingredients. There are sources from Finland that I haven’t encountered before but they deliver great, simple ingredients that we know are good for the skin; such as Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C (the Vitamin C is really potent too.) The price point is wonderful, not everyone can afford to spend $250 plus on an eye cream, Lumene is affordable but the products work.
What is your everyday skincare must-have?
Facial mists are brilliant, you should have one on you at all times. I use a mist throughout the day, even over my make-up. If you work in a controlled environment like an office, where there is air conditioning or it’s heated, a mist is essential. I keep one in my purse so I can always put my hands on it. Not only will a mist re-hydrate your skin but it also refreshes it and gives it a really pretty glow. I also love to use a mist after cleansing; when you cleanse it can take your skin up to an hour to bring that precious NMF, or oil and water, balance back into line. When you use a mist you’re speeding up the process.
What are your skin essentials when you’re travelling?
I always have an Antioxidant serum and facial mist with me when I’m flying. I don’t care if people see me applying my skincare on a flight, but, if you’re shy you can always pop to the ladies to care for your skin. I always drink plenty of water to help with hydration too.
